In North America at the end of the Civil War, many people moved west in search of new opportunities; this movement called for the need to provide more and more food for everyone, without depending on supplies from the East. About 50-60 million buffaloes roamed freely on the great plains; buffalo hunting thus became a way to make quick money. The Sharps rifle was undoubtedly the rifle built specifically of this period.
